Each year, 140 to 160 officers die in the line of duty, leaving families and colleagues to cope with their loss. Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) provides resources to help them rebuild their lives, offering peer support, counseling, scholarships, and specialized programs for survivors. Founded in 1984 with 110 members, C.O.P.S. now supports over 80,000 survivors and operates more than 50 chapters nationwide. In addition to assisting families, C.O.P.S. trains law enforcement agencies on how to handle line-of-duty deaths. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, its programs are funded by grants and donations.
